I don't think that anymore, but I think the wish to serve people in need (dire need) remains.

You are right--you can help people in many ways. Hopefully, I'll figure out how.

Ruth

Hi Ruth,
One way to think about it is where in the chain do you contribute the most value? If you do what comes naturally to you, you will be able to do more for anyone you are working for. It takes an amazing number of people with widely different talents to get a bowl of rice into the hands of a starving child. What do you do best?

Do you like developing relationships with the starving people?
Do you like cooking for the starving people?
Do you like organizing getting the food from point A to point B?
Do you like running an organization that gets food from point A to point B?
Do you want to work for an organization that teaches people how to grow food or governments how to get their people out of poverty?
For either of these organizations, do you want to run a support function for them? HR, Accounting, Operations?
Do you want to raise money for them? Organize parties for them to raise money?
Do you want to donate money to them?
Do you want to make a lot of money so you can donate more money to them?

What do you like to do? Whatever you like to do can be brought into service for what is important to you. That way you can feel good in two ways: You can be working to meet a need, to help a cause and you can be doing what you enjoy.

Win

More Press Coverage

Please click on the links below for more career tips:

From Forbes:

Ten Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Career

How To Craft A Job Search Elevator Pitch

How To Ace Your Interview

What To Reveal During Your Job Search

When They Don't Call To Offer You The Job

From Money Magazine:

Surviving a layoff

Searching from out of town

Hi Win,
Thank you for sharing your insights at the BU alumni event last night at the Princeton Club. I found your advice to be very helpful and wanted to touch base with you. I was in the audience and had a question, but didn't have a chance to ask.

Currently I live in Boston and am looking to relocate to New York City, but am finding it to be a challenge in the NY job search being a non-NY candidate. Do you have any advice in overcoming the disadvantage of being a non-local candidate? Some people have advised for me to use a NY address on my resume, but I'm not sure if I should do that. However, I know that this method has worked in some cases. I am applying to mostly positions in retail buying/apparel at an entry to mid level.

Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,
Greta

Hi Greta,
Use the fact that you are in Boston to your advantage. Hone your presentation and your positioning with experts in Boston. You will be able to say honestly that you do not want to work for them and so they will not have to hold back. It is also not hard to believe that they will have contacts in New York. Keep your Boston address!

Win

How do I get from "What does your day look like?" to "When can I start?”

Win,
I'm going to an event tomorrow where I will be meeting a lot of people who work in private wealth management. I may research that subject first so I have a few questions/comments ready. I am meeting Tom tomorrow. I will ask if he can put me in touch with the friend he mentioned to me.

I am getting a better idea now of the importance of understanding the day to day aspect of a person's job.

I think at first I was predominantly worried about how to talk about myself and how to approach people, and which people to even start approaching. I feel more confident about the first two now. Now I have to start unraveling problem number three. I must admit that I don't understand how to get from "What does your day look like" to "When can I start?” However, I do see that it will be easier to cross that bridge if I have some more information. It may so happen that I really don't like what people who work in private wealth management do or the people who do it, or maybe it will be great . . . I don't know.

The steps as I see them are:
1. Learning to talk about myself.
2. Learning to approach others for information
3. Identifying who to speak to
4. Approaching them

5.
6.
7.
8. Getting a job

I don't know how many steps there are between 4 and "getting a job" but I assume there are a few. I'll be working on it pretty steadily until we meet again.

Best,
Celia

Good thoughts, Celia! You are definitely headed in the right direction. How did you know that there were just three missing steps?

5. Learning about what you are interested in (as you allude to)

6. Developing the expertise so that you would be considered as a viable candidate competing against others who have direct experience

7. Unearthing and pursuing other opportunities like the ones you have found enticing and generally pursuing the areas you want to be employed in. This will involve some parts of gaining credibility through your discussions with people in the field so that you are increasingly referred to hire ups who are in a position to hire you, and some parts of approaching employers as a viable candidate through networking, ads, recruiters and letters.

Throughout this process, you may have offers of forwarding your resume or even employment. You will want to weigh the risks of taking a job about which you know little versus the security of having a job!

Win

Hi Win,
Thank you. I'll keep these things in mind. From your list, I see #6 as the next big challenge, immediately followed by the second to last sentence in your email. I find that very confusing but will cross that bridge when I come to it. It will take years to develop the expertise my competitors have so I find that part very discouraging. That is something I will want to clarify along the way.

I'll keep you posted.
Best,
Celia

Celia,
Don't confuse experience with ability to handle what comes at you. They need someone who CAN DO the job. Going for candidates who have done the job before is a good rule of thumb, no more.

Win

How to position yourself for promotion

Hi Win,

Thought I'd share the latest with you. Earlier this week, I spoke to ****, and their hiring needs have changed. In tandem, I'm practically now officially part of Tom’'s team starting in 2010, which is great since it's better for me but not great since it's not really changing my salary or level (e.g., no promotion).

In the end, I think it's working out all right. It would have been great to have leverage, but it would have also been really weird since people are still congratulating me, etc. I think I need to be in the position for at least three months, and I feel a lot more primed to think about and prepare for my next position than when I got a little caught off guard when ****reached out to me.

Anyway, let's reconnect late Jan. I'm a little tired thinking about these things, and I really don't feel comfortable doing anything major while I'm so new in my position.
Sarah

I am glad you no longer have to choose, Sarah. And I agree that feeling like you are disloyal is not a good way to live your life. I would recommend keeping your eyes open and see what it takes to be promoted (types of work, consistency, navigating politics, making clients happy in a certain way, etc.). You may also ask, but it is good to have some ideas before you do, and see how you can get in a position to deliver those results.
Happy to talk when you are ready,
Win

Interviewing is like dating . . .

Win,
I had a question for you. It's all in the attitude and confidence. And as you know from relationships, confidence is the cologne that brings in the mosquitoes!
Win

Thanks, Win. Good point. Hopefully, the market will further stabilize and the economy will start to grow again in the second half of the year. I will be patient for the career opportunity that can potentially use all my strengths. It will be a dream come true.
Best Regards,
Joanne

On Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 8:50 PM
> Joanne
> It was such a pleasure to meet you. I certainly enjoyed our
> brief and warm conversation. Thank you for taking the time.
> Rarely are we graced by someone with such a broad mix of
> highly desirable talents. It is my sincere hope that we stay
> in touch and that at some time we may work together. Perhaps
> as the current environment repairs itself, we may get that
> chance. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me at
> any time. I guess you guys really got along. My first recommendation is to find more people to have conversations with. Bob is not the only one who will "get" what you have to offer. You might want to set a goal of how many new contacts a week to make.

Specifically with Bob, circle back to him as time goes on, maybe a month hence and let him know what's going on with your search. Are there any companies you would like to know more about? Are there industry developments you are interested in discussing with him? With people he knows? Think about reasons for him to want to talk to you and to refer you to others.
Hope that helps,
Win

Accomplishment Stories

Win,
You mentioned that I need to let people know what I can do for them in the form of “accomplishment stories.” Can you go over for me what I should be considering when coming up with these?
Thank you,
Subir

Hi Subir,
Here are some thoughts on what to include in your accomplishment stories. There is no one way to do this. The overall idea is to get the listener's interest. The things you talk about do not all have to be your most impressive accomplishments and as we discussed, a major accomplishment can have many smaller accomplishment stories in it. When selecting accomplishments, keep your focus on things you enjoyed and which have a recognized, perhaps measurable, result.

To catch their attention, be clear where you began: problem situation that you recognized or that was brought to your attention. Then fill in some detail about what was difficult or what went wrong. The mark of a professional is how you deal with problems that arise (calls not returned, unexpected client development, changed requirement or resources, etc.) Don't leave out the problems. The actions you take to overcome problems are the most compelling evidence that you can give of how you work. The Princess does not meet the Prince and get married the next day. Take the audience along on the experience, which ends with a fabulous accomplishment.

Develop any number of stories. As you begin to look at them, you will begin to recognize what skills of yours they represent. As you hone your direction and find out which of your abilities are most in demand for the positions that interest you, you can develop stories that illustrate those particular skills or that experience.

If any of this is not clear or any questions occur to you, please don't hesitate to ask.
Win

Press coverage

If you are interested in press coverage of some of Win's career tips, please click on some of the links below.

March 2009 See Win with a successful client on the CBS Early Show
:

Hear Win's ideas on networking by Joe Connolly on WCBS for the Wall Street Journal.
January 2009 Tips for People Who Shy Away from Neworking
January 2009 You Don't Need a Personality Transplant . . .

October 2008 Learn how Win helps clients in the New York Post

Win's advice on negotiating in eFinancialCareers
June 2007 Shape an Unborn Offer Through Shadow Negotiating
July 2007 Got an Offer? Your thoughts around that sound like figuring out the relative place of work within your wider life might be something to discuss.

As for a magic wand, yes: for any and all jobs or projects, try to list your accomplishments (even if you never need to do whatever it was again.) I do this in an old resume, using the reverse chronological format. List all accomplishments, big and small ones within a bigger project. I call this document an Experience Bank; it is a resource for the future. The idea here is to be exhaustive, not exclusionary and see if that doesn't help remind you of what you can do, have done and like!
Win

Win,
I was at last night's presentation. I was a little apprehensive about asking this question in that forum so I hope you'll indulge me. . . . I have been a working journalist for more than 30 years. . . . The fact is that after a long career with several national awards, I was unceremoniously laid off from my daily newspaper job at the end of October. Although the panel gave a number of good tips, some of which I will follow up on, my problem is straightforward: Employers hear "30 years of experience," or if I omit that fact and still manage to get an interview, they see a 56-year-old head full of gray hair and that's as far as it goes. Why hire me when, if there is any job at all, they can fill it with a kid half my age, at half the salary, one they see as more attuned to the youth market? This is the second time I've been laid off because of downsizing in less than a decade, and my prospects at this point are bleak. Not only is there no retirement in my future, but it's dicey whether I can even survive and support my family on the meager savings I've got left.

Also, while it's necessary to keep up with trends and technology, I can spend a lot of time, energy and effort to learn all the new bells and whistles, and then in a year or so, the technocrats invent a whole new generation, and you have to learn once again. All these wonderful toys are just tools, after all; the content is supposed to be the point. But the gearheads seem to think the technology itself is the point, as though a brand new high-tech hammer is more important than the house you build it with.

I probably sound bitter, angry and worried. Yeah, I am. If there were any indication that things were going to get better, I might be a little less so, but I don't see that happening. For most of the 22-year-olds in last night's audience, a temporary setback early in their career is part of the colorful, fun time they'll look back on when they're my age. At my age, it's not colorful or fun; it's pathetic and scary. What do I do? I don't expect you to have an answer.
Alan

Hi Alan,
I can understand how you feel. It is a frustrating market, generally, and specifically in most parts of media. The key to what you say is the salary. The problem is not that by dint of doing it longer, that you get to have more money, it is that you are worth more money, so people pay you more. If you are writing articles that a 25-year-old can write, then you are barking up the wrong tree.

Where do you have a competitive advantage and what do you like to write? For instance, if you like to write about what 25-year-olds like to write about, then write about those things for an audience of 60-year-olds. Where is your experience an advantage? And who cares what you look like if you can write? How can you write pieces that will speak for themselves? Only by going for an audience who appreciates what you bring to the table will you be able to earn what you are worth.

On the subject of technology, much of it is free and the basics, which is all you should need to know is not that time consuming to learn. The medium is only part of the message. Don't let it screen you out.

Hope that helps a little. The good news is that you can still write.
Win

Resume History

How far back should my resume should date? As we approach September, the second biggest hiring month (after January), it is a great time to begin to make a career and job search plans. Having a marketing plan will help you eliminate a lot of wasted time and provide some support when things start getting busy and distractions crop up. The big question is what should that plan look like? The answer is: not that complicated. There are just three basic questions that you will want to answer.

1. Where are you heading?
What jobs, professions or fields might be interesting to you? These are your targets. You don’t need definitive targets right away, but you ought at least to have some ideas about what might interest you. If you are looking for a good culture to work in, for instance, talk to people about what you like. You never know who has ideas. If you have no idea at all, just ask people what their work is like or how they spend their days. If you already know where you are heading, start with step two!

2. Who to talk to?
First, pick those targets from your list that are of greatest interest to you. Also see which, because of prior experience or friends in the business, are easiest to pursue. Look for industry groups, alumni and other social groups for people who will be happy to hear from you. Starting with people who want to talk to you and those in whom you are interested may not seem efficient, but in the end it is a lot easier and can turn out to be unexpectedly productive.

3. Why are you talking to them?
Naturally, you will not want to alienate or intimidate any of your contacts by asking them for a job, as it is unlikely that anyone of them will have the right job for you at that moment (assuming you know what that ideal job is). But, if you can get them talking about their field or their company, and you share why you are interested, including something about your relevant experience, they may have ideas of other people for you to talk to.

To get started on that, list questions you have. These will change over time as you become more informed. Start by turning any assumptions you have into questions. E.g., My understanding is that Marketing departments are increasingly integrating their efforts across new and old media, what is your experience? Other questions may range from ‘What do managers get paid here?’ to ‘Where does your area fit within the organization?’

If you can answer any or all of the three basic questions above, put the results down on paper. It will make it easier to execute. Set aside a little time each week (or even each day) to do this. Just a little time begins to accumulate if you keep at it. See what you can do in 2 hours or less working on it. That way you can have a plan to begin to move ahead in the fall.

If you are currently working, that is not a reason for skipping this exercise. It is never a bad time to be spending a little time on your career!

Win

When is the right time to search?

Hi Win-
I'm a little discouraged that there are so few jobs and so few people who know of anything. People keep telling me this is the wrong environment to be looking for a job, which isn't very helpful. A friend in the headhunter industry just told me that she thinks if I don't have a job by July 1st that I should realize I won't have one till January due to the summer, fall budget season and holidays. I felt like crying.

Any calming words of wisdom?
Carla

Hi Carla,
Your friend quoted common wisdom. In fact September rivals January as the biggest hiring month and do you really think no one is hired except then? Yes. The job market is slower now, but companies are hiring too. They don't like to advertise it when they are letting people go, but jobs still need to be filled.

On the subject of networking, it is important to remember that what you are doing now is finding out more, not finding out who has jobs. You are finding people who you like and who like you. Together you will find out all that is going on. When there are jobs, you will hear about them. What are the odds that the week you talk to someone, that they will know about an open job? Pretty small I would say. You are not talking to people to find out about jobs. You are talking to them to find out more, about their part of the industry, their company, their department, their boss. I know it seems counter-intuitive, but focusing on building those relationships is key. If people like you, they will keep their eyes out for you. People think the only way they can help you is to point you to a job. It just ain't so.
Win

How to approach people

Win,
Thank you for your note.

I understand that you should not make them [networking contacts] feel like you are asking them for a job, but I thought you could ask them for more contacts in order to gain more information. How in the process do you work in getting access to more contacts?
Ann

Ann,
Contacts, yes! But contacts for more information, not for jobs. Asking any contact for a job does two things. First, it puts them in an awkward position if they don't have a job and second, if they don't have one, then you don't even get to talk to them. The answer: turn your assumptions about the job into questions, get curious about the work, what they like about it and what they don't. As you are learning more, you will also get known. People will begin to think of you when a job does arise.
Win
www.WinSheffield.com

What level is right for me?

Hi Helen,
I know we spoke about conveying in your stories the scope and level of the work you did and that this is the best way for them to know how to place you. The other side of that, for the internal interviews you are having, is that you want to listen for (and ask specifically where you can) what your role would be in the activities of the department. You will be listening for the kinds of skills you will be able to/expected to exercise, level of autonomy, etc.

I'm sure you know that what they are prepared to let you do eventually will depend on what you do to prove yourself. So, you will be listening for potential scope. Also, it is hard to do, but as best you can, think about what really would be too much for you to take on now (and what experience you would have to have to make it do-able.)
As I said, let me know if you have any questions & have fun with it,
Win
www.WinSheffield.com

Keeping On Top of Your Career While Working

From: Gary
Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2008 10:01 AM

Hi Win,

I think I did well, negotiating a 12 months run-way until next steps will be considered. It's very thoughtful of you.

Here goes, if you really want to know. :)

To tell you the truth, I am mentally exhausted from trying so hard to figure out what to do. I mistakenly latched on to Marketing Research and enrolled in a certificate course because I wanted so much to have a direction. I think I took off running in the wrong direction (which is what I often do), and I am tired and confused from that sprint.

I believe I would be happy in magazine editorial (but as an editor, not a copy editor). It will never give me decent money, but I would like to do it. My challenge is that I can not see another way of getting in beyond starting at the bottom as an assistant. I don't know if I could afford to live on that salary. Maybe I am caught in a web of negative thinking?

I sent an e-mail to my old boss who is now the deputy editor at PublA, and I have not heard back from her yet. I was her assistant when she was the Lifestyle Director at PublB ten years ago. I am a little embarrassed to talk to her because I feel like I am coming back to her ten years later and I have not moved ahead in my career since I worked as her assistant. I think I am ashamed in a lot of ways.

Some of my skills are: copyediting, organizational skills, able to teach one-on-one

Win, I think I don't know what to do still. So I am resting and hoping something will happen, and I will have an epiphany.

Many thanks for checking in on me.

:)

Ann

Thanks Ann. You are thinking clearly about all this. It is frustrating to think you require a miracle. A couple of suggestions: On the skills that you have, try going down to the next level of detail, e.g., what exactly are organizational skills. Go back to your accomplishments stories. What have you organized in the past? The other thing that comes to mind is people skills. These could fall under "organizational skills", but in any case, specific examples of accomplishments will clarify for people (and for yourself) what you can do.

Win
If, on the other hand, like me, your project work centers on taking an area, working with them to improve their processes and integrating that into the day-to-day process, it is more difficult to get in by resume.

Sounds like you are doing a lot of good activity. To the extent that your qualifications, e.g., six sigma & salesforce.com are where you want to go professionally, you will do well to apply to jobs. If you want to focus on project management, applying as a primary strategy is still pretty good. With project management you also have more chances of finding a PM networking group, which should broaden your options. Keep in mind that 20% of jobs are posted.

Good luck with the exam & hang in there.
